Scholarship Description
The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa is calling for applications for PhD scholarship awards provided by DAAD as one of its ‘In-Region Scholarship Award Program in South Africa’. Full scholarships are available for Five PhD students accepted for the Migration and Displacement program at ACMS in 2021 (see detailed DAAD call for applications here).
Utilizing approaches from across different disciplines such as humanities, the social sciences, and built environment, the project will carry out original research as well as interventions in Johannesburg (South Africa), Accra (Ghana), as well as in Nairobi (Kenya). Through continental and trans-local collaborations with contemporaries in the arts and academia, it will make crucial theoretical, methodological and conceptual contributions to exisiting theories on multiple mobilities as well as urbanization across sub-Saharan Africa.
DAAD will make the final decisions and administer the scholarships. African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) is in charge of the first phase of the application process which will involve pre-selection and shortlisting of applicants. African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) will forward the shortlisted applicants to DAAD for the second phase of the application process and the final decisions.
DAAD scholarship program in Germany is a private, federally sponsored and state-funded, self-governing national agency of the higher education institutions in Germany, which represents 365 German institutions of higher education (i.e. 100 universities and technical universities, 162 general universities of applied sciences, as well as 52 colleges of music and art). The DAAD itself doesn’t provide programs of study or courses, but gives excellence-based, competitive grants to be utilized toward study and/or research in Germany at any of the accredited German higher education institutions.

Requirements
- Must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa);
- PhD applicants must have an MA degree with a total aggregate mark of at least 70%;
- Must have been accepted to study for PhD in Migration and Displacement at ACMS.
How to Apply
- Research Concept: this should outline your research topic or question, relevant literature and proposed methods. This should be 5 – 10 pages
- 2 reference/recommendation letter.

Applications should include:
- A cover letter summarizing qualifications, professional experience and reasons for interest in the Migration and Displacement program;
- A complete CV;
- Copies of transcripts and degree certificates;
- SAQA evaluation (for foreign qualifications);
- A short research proposal (1500 words maximum) outlining the proposed research project;
- A writing sample of not more than 10,000 words (e.g., a chapter; article; term paper).
Female candidates as well as applicants from less privileged nations or groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
