Scholarship Description

Started in 2013, the World Bank Group (WBG) Africa Fellowship Award Program seeks young outstanding African nationals who are completing or recently finished a PhD in a field that is relevant to the World Bank’s work. The fellowship award program has been quite successful since its launch, developing a strong supply of young African talents that are interested in a career in international institutions, development, think tanks, African governments, as well as academia.

The program provides selected fellows a six-month assignment at World Bank Group offices in Washington D.C. (USA) or in other country offices to get hands-on remarkable experience in the operations of the World Bank Group. This involves design of global and country policies, knowledge generation and dissemination, and the development of institutions to accomplish inclusive growth in developing nations. While getting benefits from research and innovation in many sectors, fellows will as well work on research, technical assistance, economic policy, as well as lending operations that add to the World Bank’s objective to eliminate poverty and increasing shared prosperity. Through the fellowship award, we seek to develop the capacity of the next generation of African change bringers in development, policymaking and enhance the aim of reducing poverty in the region.

The 2020 World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Award Program is to host up to fifteen (15) fellows. This year, with the assistance of the Think Africa Partnership, a private sector window offers assistance for ten (10) additional fellowship award positions with a specific focus on development and finance of the private sector. The additional ten (10) fellows will work on furthering the macroeconomic, business as well as financial frameworks to improve private sector investment, ensure that the economic policy making is strengthened and ultimately advance economic growth across the whole region.
